In the series Hochstand, Beate Kunath combines the format of the series with a concept in order to emphasize the contours of the high seat architecture and overcome the apparent arbitrariness of the single frame by means of suitable light conditions and perspectives. The single frames are meant to comment and enhance one another by provoking comparisons and thus conveying similarities and differences.
“In my photo series of phone booths and high seats, I am interested in objects, so-called individual things, that are fundamentally serving a self-same purpose at the same time occurring in a variety of forms. By means of photography, I am trying to organize these forms in order to find common features and differences of individual things.[nbsp]
My works are characterized in a documentary way, because I photograph the objects exactly as I discover them myself, I rearrange nothing leaving things in place, just like the opened door of a high seat or platic chairs stacked in a certain way and left by their absent users. Sometimes, I become an incidental collector of indications.”
