Matias Kauage is the most successful representative of outsider art and is considered the most famous artist of Papua New Guinea. Kauage’s confident hand is also found in this painting. Using black lines he organizes his motifs as they persist in the dual dimensionality of the paper or canvas.
In 1998 he was honoured with an O.B.E. by Queen Elizabeth for his contributions to the development of contemporary Papua New Guinean art. A painting he presented to the Queen now hangs in Buckingham Palace.
